How much will an OEM version of Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate cost?

Windows Vista OEM prices.
Ask your Microsoft product rep. They will be the ones who will have that info...though I am not sure that many OEM's will be providing ULtimate... "Nelson24" wrote in message

Or your distributor where you usually buy OEM software to include with your hardware.

What really is the difference between Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate, after all? Is it really not the difference between XP Home and XP Professional, with Aero tossed in?.
No one at this time knows how much any edition of Vista will cost, since Microsoft has not yet published a pricing structure for Vista.
But if past prices for Microsoft OEM products are any indication, the OEM editions will be ~$100 - ~$150 less than the Retail editions, depending on market conditions, and how far Microsoft is willing to go to get Vista distributed to the world.

With all due respect to Nelson24, I don't think you will buy those editions the same way you buy XP OEM editions.
My understanding is that you will purchase a new product key from MS online that will unlock the additional features and capabilities for moving from Home Basic to Home Premium or Ultimate.
It would be like being able to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro without having to buy an XP Pro cd. That implies that the extra bits will already be on your computer and just need to be unlocked. I believe that is the case.

What Colin is describing is the 'Upgrade Anytime'. "Colin Barnhorst" wrote in message

That is the case, it's not quite as simple as a new product key (ie: you won't be able to just enter a pirated key and unlock Vista Ultimate) but you will be able to upgrade online without downloading the locked parts since they are already there

Yes, I believe you will be able to unlock the DVD and then install the new stuff(as opposed to having it sitting on your computer unuseable) BUT, are they going to have that feature available for OEM versions? Many OEM versions nowadays are keyed to the machines(Dell, etc)

Just as interesting a question is, how do the OEMs as partners get their piece of this action? Will you be able to upgrade from the OEM or just MS?

If you decide to go the way of OEM software, make sure you purchase a so-called "Full OEM" of Vista produced by Microsoft, which would be much like the Retail version, but without the ability to do an Upgrade installation, and without the ability to transfer such a license to a new machine.

Just to pick nits...but the Ultimate will not have all the Enterprise stuff...The Enterprise, which can only be purchased through Software Assurance(or whatever it is called) will include VirtualPC(since their license allows them to run multiple copies of windows), Ultimate will not have Virtual PC and some other Enterprise specific stuff that does not make sence on a home machine.
From Paul Thurrott's Supersite: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_editions_final.asp
Windows Vista Enterprise Optimized for the enterprise, this version will be a true superset of Windows Vista Business, available only via volume license to Software Assurance (SA) customers. It will include unique features such as single-instance Virtual PC, the multi-language user interface (MUI), and the Secure Startup/full volume encryption security technologies ("Cornerstone").
Windows Vista Ultimate The best operating system ever offered for a personal PC, optimized for the individual. Windows Vista Ultimate is a superset of both Vista Home Premium and Vista Business, so it includes all of the features of both of those product versions, plus adds Game Performance Tweaker with integrated gaming experiences, a Podcast creation utility (under consideration, may be cut from product), and online "Club" services (exclusive access to music, movies, services and preferred customer care) and other "Vista Ultimate Extras" offerings (also under consideration, may be cut from product).
